	LEGACY OF THE EMERALD THRONE is a fantasy novel about a woman's journey from reluctant pupil to a powerful sorceress doomed to die young. It is based in the world of First Heir. BRIEF EXCERPT: Bree felt the familiar tingle as her mother used her gift. A small, winged dragon appeared out of thin air, sharp claws outstretched, jaws wide, exposing jagged teeth. It belched fire at Bree, who squealed and ducked under the flames. “Mother!” she cried as the beast, no bigger than her head, chased Bree around the room, swiping at her with clawed feet and shooting fire. “Think, child!” her mother demanded, her tone unconcerned and disapproving. Bree cast an angry look at her and earned a swipe from the dragon’s claws. She turned aside and instead of hooking the flesh of her shoulder, the beast merely tore her dress. She dropped to the floor and a blast of fire shot through the space she’d occupied. Bree closed her eyes. Reaching inside herself for the brilliant glow of her gift, she felt power fill her. Like molten lava flooding her limbs, it poured through her. As it reached her fingertips, she flung her arms wide, focusing her mind on that darkness beyond a rift. She imagined a window above her, opening to that eerie emptiness of the beyond. Bree felt the pull, and opened her mind’s eye to the room. The dragon circled the rift, unwilling to enter it but unable to resist its pull. It’s sweeps drew nearer the window, until it vanished through it and became no more. Bree shuddered and let the rift collapse.
