BRIEF EXCERPT:

Laurin was making her way between a family of homeless children and a very territorial looking mutt when she saw a glimmer ahead in the darkness. She walked slowly past the growling animal, eager to see what shiny trinket might lay ahead. When she was free of the dog she hurried her pace. She could no longer see the glimmer but she knew where to begin her search. The spot turned out to be a small pile of rags. She looked around for any possible owners, but this end of the alley was empty. Crouching down, she reached slowly towards the rags. They were filthy, and smelled of human waste, but she was determined to find out what had caught her attention. Peeking out from under them was a small sphere that would fit snugly in the palm of her hand. It appeared made of glass, clear as a rain drop. Laurin stared at it in awe. She'd never seen anything so finely crafted in her life.

As her eyes locked on the sphere, it began to glow. The white light that had caught her eye in the first place mesmerized her. She saw nothing else. Her hand reached for it against her will. When her dirty fingers touched the glowing sphere, it tingled, then filled her hand, arm, and whole body with a warm wave of comfort. She stared at it as the light went from brilliant white to a cool, comforting blue. The warmth lessened, but did not fade completely.

Then, the glow vanished completely, leaving her in the alley with a small glass globe.
